Many beautiful churches with serene courtyards are scattered around the main Istiklal avenue. Historic passages and facades reminisce about French and Italian influence. Fragments of Art Nouveau and Art Deco decorate the interiors of many cafes and restaurants.

It’s no surprise that the quarter was popular among many influential personas over the course of time. Just to name a few, Agatha Christie had always stayed in Pera while on her regular visits to Istanbul. Author Ernest Hemingway is known to have stayed in the Grand de Londres hotel which will take you back to the charms of the 19th century. Another great American writer – James Baldwin lived in Istanbul for over 10 years and was a welcomed guest in the cultural gatherings happening in the area.
